When released World Serpent Distribution provided this information about this release: "The picture disc is made up of two versions of the song Let There Be Thorns. The A-side, with Rose McDowall, Robert Lee, Nigel McKernaghan & John Contreras, is an acoustic treatment of the original, with an extended vocal break. The track is richly layered, and exudes a dreamy quality. The B-side is a version arranged, and for the most part performed by Michael Cashmore. Michael's version shows up his typical, minimal and aesthetic temperament, and is a welcome variation on Sorrow's work. The song itself written by Rose and music by Robert indicates the content of the next Sorrow release. The theme being that of the necessity of loss and longing in the pursuit of greater achievement. In her mind Rose braved the whiplash tongues and relished the pain and torture in order that she may return stronger and more willful in the face of hardship and derision. The disc was visualized by Robert and adapted from the photography of Tobias Seeliger, who took the original photograph of Rose & Robert."
Sorrow are Robert Lee and Rose McDowall, the scottish singer, and guitarist. In addition to being one half of the popular goth-pop duo Strawberry Switchblade, McDowall is perhaps best-known as a guest vocalist or "floating member" of several different alternative bands, particularly neofolk. She contributed backing or lead vocals for Coil, Current 93, Death in June, Felt, Alex Fergusson, Into a Circle, Megas, Nature and Organisation, Nurse with Wound, Ornamental, Psychic TV and Boyd Rice on recordings as well as singing or playing guitar for live appearances.
